Quevera’s Variations II

To Know a Woman

The husband and wife had been married for many years. They knew each other better than they knew anything. They were soul mates. When he touched her in bed, he felt her soul radiating through her bare skin. Sometimes when they made love he came so close to her he could swear that she was inside him and not the other way around. He believed that each time he made love to her his soul grew closer to hers, and that, indeed, their children represented not only the merging of their bodies, but the merging of his soul and hers. When his wife came, her eyes opened so wide they saw the entire universe, and he saw it too, reflected in her eyes.

One day at work he overheard two young men discussing whether a man should live with a woman before he marries her. They agreed that you should live with her, because getting to know a woman before you tie the knot is important. It is best to know what you are getting into.

He shook his head. He didn’t tell them so, because they wouldn’t understand, but you really can’t know a woman until you’ve been married for ten years. And even after ten years have passed, you will keep knowing more about her, because there is always more to know. As the spirit goes, a woman is as big as a continent.

It humbled him to think how beautiful his wife was and how grateful he was to her for opening up so much that he never had known and never even had glimpsed before.

A Toy in the Attic

The wood carving had belonged to an old aunt—her great-great-aunt—who had traveled the world back in the 1930s and 1940s before women did such things. Her aunt had traveled to the Orient, through East Africa, and into the Brazilian rain forests. She must have purchased the carving in the Orient—in Japan or China—since the man and woman had almond eyes, and dressed in long, flowing robes. The man’s eyebrows were raised. The woman, with her back to the man, turned her head to glance at him. On her face was a look that expressed both pain and pleasure.

Her cousin, a girl a year or two older, showed it to her. The cousin led her to the musty attic of the family’s summer house, opened a trunk, and unwrapped it. At first, the carving did not seem remarkable.

“But watch this,” her cousin said.

She grasped one side with one hand and the other side with her other hand, and gently pulled the two sides apart. Magically, the man and woman disengaged and became two figures. Now she saw, emerging from the man’s robes, a slender piece of wood, an erect penis painted bright red.

The cousins giggled uncontrollably. They laughed until tears came to their eyes.

When her cousin fitted the two pieces back together, she heard a crisp clicking sound. You could say that the girl lost her virginity the moment she heard that sound. She understood that the man’s penis penetrates the woman’s body during intercourse. The thought of it both frightened and excited her.
